Clinic provides outpatient cardiovascular diagnostic services

The UNM Cardiology Clinic opened July 18, 2011. UNM faculty cardiologists Robert DuBroff, MD, and Abinash Achrekar, MD, serve as the clinic's physicians.

Patients have access to a full range of outpatient cardiovascular diagnostic services provided by a team of board certified cardiologists, specialized technicians, and office staff using the most advanced equipment and technologies.

The UNM Westside Cardiology Clinic is part of the award-winning UNM Cardiology team at the UNM Health Sciences Center that has earned several honors and designations, including:

  • Best in state and highest ranked academic hospital in the nation for heart attack treatment response time by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and University HealthSystem Consortium.
  • Only hospital in the state with Advanced Certification in Heart Failure – granted by the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association.
  • Gold Plus Medal recipient of the 2010 American Heart Association “Get With the Guidelines” – highest level designation for a program designed to ensure that hospitals consistently care for cardiac patients by following the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations.

Lead physician

Dr. DuBroff comes to UNM after many years in private practice in Albuquerque. He attended medical school at the University of Chicago, specialized in Internal Medicine during his internship and residency at the University of California - San Francisco, and completed his cardiology fellowship at Northwestern University where he was chief fellow. He also completed an American Heart Association mini-fellowship in lipid disorders at the University of California, Berkeley. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Critical Care Medicine (1987-1997), Nuclear Cardiology, Echocardiography (testamur), Lipidology, and Vascular Ultrasound. Abinash Achrekar, MD

Dr. Achrekar attended college at UC Berkeley, public health school at Yale University, and medical school at Michigan State University. He has completed Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Achrekar is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. His interests are in public health and preventive Cardiology. (Read more at Find a Doctor.)
