Cuttrell

Gary Cuttrell is Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Dental Services in the Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine which houses the AEGD residency program. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston. Dr. Cuttrell is also a graduate of the University of Illinois “Dentist in Anesthesia” program and is board certified in dental anesthesia. Dr. Cuttrell is also a licensed attorney in the State of New Mexico, serving on the New Mexico Medical Review Commission.








Espinoza

Kimberly Espinoza, DDS
Associate Professor

Kimberly Espinoza is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She provides dental care for people with developmental disabilities at UNM Carrie Tingley Hospital Dental Clinic. She completed her general dental residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 2006 and her dental degree at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in 2004. Prior to dental school, she attended Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and physics.

Dr. Espinoza’s professional interests include public health and oral health for people with developmental disabilities. She is a fellow of the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities, a component organization of the Special Care Dentistry Association. She educates dental residents in the provision of care for people with developmental disabilities. Additionally, she mentors pre-dental students looking into the dental professions. Dr. Espinoza is currently enrolled in a Masters in Public Health program, and is scheduled to complete the degree in 2011. She is also interested in dental education, medical sociology in relation to health professions, and health policy. Dr. Espinoza enjoys life with her husband Rafael Howell-Flores, who is a classical and tango musician. Together they enjoy vegan cooking, exploring the southwest, and spending time with their pets.





Jensen

Peter M. Jensen, DDS, MS, MPH
AEGD Program Director

Peter M. Jensen is Associate Professor and the Director of the AEGD Residency Program at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He received a B.A. in government from Harvard University. After graduating from the University of Detroit School of Dentistry and completing a general practice residency at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital, Dr. Jensen was in private practice in rural Nebraska for 18 years. He served as Director of the faculty practice at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1999-2005, served as the Interim Clinical Director of the Outreach Programs in the Division of Community Dentistry and Oral Disease Prevention from 2004-2005, and accepted his current position at the University of New Mexico in 2005. He completed his MPH degree in 2006 through the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the New Mexico Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Dental Education Association.





Ravago

Melissa Ravago, DMD
Assistant Professor

Melissa Ravago is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She is a native New Mexican who completed her undergraduate studies and received her B.A. at the University of New Mexico. She received her dental degree from Tufts University-School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, where she received the Kasparian Scholarship in recognition of her academic achievements. While at Tufts she also participated in community outreach initiatives, such as the Give Kids a Smile program and visited assisted living facilities and senior centers to perform oral cancer screenings and teach geriatric dental care such as denture maintenance. Dr. Ravago began practicing at the University of New Mexico in 2007. She assisted with a community outreach program at Eastern New Mexico University in Roswell, New Mexico. She also participates in the School Based Health program, which provides comprehensive exams, dental sealants, and child prophylaxis to Albuquerque middle school children. She participates in the University of New Mexico Pre-Dental Society providing mentorship and advice to undergraduate students interested in pursuing dental careers. Dr. Ravago spends most of her clinic-oriented hours at the Southeast Heights Clinic, where she provides treatment and supervision of residents’ treatment of children in the federal Medicaid program and Albuquerque’s indigent population.





Tatlock

Charles Tatlock, DDS, MPH
BA/DDS Professor

Charles Tatlock, is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine, Division of Dental Services. At the University, Dr. Tatlock teaches several undergraduate courses designed to introduce students to the dental health professions. The courses he has taught include the Freshman Learning Community course on the Dental Health Professions (FLC 612, Arts and Sciences 198), and the Career Awareness Seminar on the Oral Health Professions (UNIV 216). In addition, Dr. Tatlock participates in teaching courses to dental residents in the University of New Mexico’s Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Residency program. Dr. Tatlock obtained his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX in 1980, and his Masters in Public Health (MPH) from the University of New Mexico in 2003. He practiced in Dallas, TX as a private practice dentist until moving to New Mexico in 1996, where he worked in public health settings until joining the University’s dental staff in 1999. He is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD) and a member of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD). Dr. Tatlock serves as the Academic Advisor for the UNM Pre-Dental Society and is the Director of Undergraduate Dental Education at UNM. He is also one of the Research Mentors for the UNMAEGD Dental Residency program.





Ivers

Melissa Ivers, DMD
Assistant Professor

Melissa Ivers is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA for her undergraduate education. She is originally from the Boston, Massachusetts area, but moved to Albuquerque after she completed her dental school education at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. At Penn, she was involved in many community outreach dental programs including the Penn Smiles Program. After dental school, she completed the advanced education in general dentistry residency at the University of New Mexico before becoming a faculty dentist in 2010. Dr. Ivers predominately works at Novitski Hall on UNM campus in the faculty dental clinic seeing patients of all ages and backgrounds while supervising the dental hygiene students. When she isn't at Novitski Hall, she works at other UNM clinics supervising residents and performing dentistry. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Education Association. Dr. Ivers is interested in starting her M.B.A. and her M.P.H. at the University of New Mexico in the near future. Aside from her position at UNM, Dr. Ivers works at an emergency dental clinic on weekends where she stays active in the Albuquerque dental community.



Dr. Carey

Alicia Carey, DDS
Assistant Professor

Alicia Carey is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She is originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She received a BA in Psychology from the University of San Diego and lived there for 2 more years before moving to Omaha, Nebraska to attend dental school at Creighton University. Dr. Carey received her DDS in May 2010. She returned to Albuquerque for the UNM AEGD program and graduated from the program in June 2011. Dr. Carey joined the faculty in September 2011. She works at Novitski Hall on UNM campus in the faculty dental clinic while supervising the dental hygiene students. She also works at Carrie Tingley seeing patients with developmental disabilities. She is interested in pursuing a MPH from UNM and continuing to travel abroad on dental service trips. She is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the New Mexico Dental Association and the Special Care Dentistry Association.



Dr. Yarbrough

G. Mark Yarbrough, DDS
Assistant Professor

Mark Yarbrough is an Assistant Professor at UNM Dental Residency program, who has interest and experience in serving general dentistry and medically complex dental patients using intravenous sedation techniques. He practiced continuously since his dental residency (US Navy ending in 1975) in private practice in Albuquerque, NM for 38 years. Dr. Yarbrough has Fellowship Status in: The International College of Dentists; The American College of Dentists, The Federation Dentistry Internationale, The Academy of General Dentistry, and The American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. His commitment to organized Dentistry by continuous membership in The ADA, NMDA, and other associations is ongoing. Dr. Yarbrough has served as an Examiner for the WREB (a national dental testing organization) since 2003, and is a former member of the NM Board of Dental Health Care. His hobbies and interests are fishing, hunting, playing piano and flying (by the seat of his pants). He did graduate from Baylor College of Dentistry a long time ago and Eastern New Mexico University even longer ago. He grew up in Portales, NM where he was a stellar kid and had a paper route and received an Eagle Scout award.


Dr. FloresJason Flores RN, DDS, DADBA, DNDBA, FADSA
Director of Dental Anesthesiology
Assistant Professor

Dr. Jason Flores is the Director of Dental Anesthesiology and Assistant Professor at the UNM AEGD Dental Ambulatory Surgical Center. Dr. Flores graduated from Lamar University in 2001 and 2004 with B.S. degrees in Biology and Nursing. He received his DDS from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston in 2009 and was the recipient of the Horace Wells Anesthesia Award and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation Award. He completed his anesthesiology training at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Dental Medicine in 2011. Dr. Flores has published several articles pertaining to the importance of dental anesthesiology in present day oral medicine and founded the Dentist Anesthesiologist Club for Students (DACS), a first of its kind organization for pre-doctoral students dedicated to educating students about the field of dental anesthesiology. Dr. Flores has been awarded Diplomate status with the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and Fellow status with the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
